It was originally founded in 1896, as a land grant college to provide education to the citizens of the state. The university provides a platform for the African-American students to complete their bachelor or master or doctoral degrees. Different branches or colleges of the university work to promote graduate and undergraduate courses. The university is situated in 160 acres of land with additional 286 acres at Camp Harry Daniels, SC.
Graduate study courses have started the in the university in 1946. The school of graduate studies offers 19 different programs. Also graduate certification programs like Environmental monitoring and restoration, human development consultant, orientation and mobility etc are available. Agribusiness, counselor education, Master of Arts in teaching, master of business administration, nutritional sciences, speech pathology and audiology are among some of the graduate degree programs available in the university. For students opting for early graduation, summer study courses are also designed at the university. Some of these courses are also offered with the most modern technologies like interactive and satellite television, internet and videotape. For research oriented faculty, various research programs are run by the university. For implementing NASA programs in education, Center for NASA research and technology is founded in the university. Also a transportation education and research program is launched through National Summer Transportation Institute. For small owners and entrepreneurs, Small Business Development center of the SC University provides different avenues.
